Recall cost scales with uncertainty, not with defect count
When a deviation is discovered downstream, the cost of the response is set by how precisely the affected population can be defined. A team that can name three pallets recalls three pallets. A team that can only name a production week recalls a production week.
That difference is not a quality problem. It is a record-keeping problem, and it is solvable with data that most plants already generate but never link together.
The four links that have to hold
Material genealogy ties each substrate roll, ink lot and adhesive batch to the job that consumed it. Process records tie the job to press conditions and inspection results. Serialisation ties finished units to the job. Dispatch records tie units to shipments and consignees.
Break any one link and the recall widens to whatever the weakest record can prove. Most organisations have three of the four and lose the fourth at the dispatch dock.
Smart labels close the last mile
QR and RFID carriers move the traceability record out of the plant and into distribution. Each scan is an event with a location and a timestamp, which turns chain of custody from an inference into a log.
For pharma and F&B customers this also converts recall simulation from an annual tabletop exercise into a query that can be run any afternoon.
