Water-based adhesives vs solvent-based: what actually changes on the line

Emissions and permitting
Solvent systems carry VOC load that drives thermal oxidiser operation, permit thresholds and worker exposure monitoring. Water-based systems reduce or remove that burden, which is often the single largest compliance saving in a conversion business case.
Plants that monitor VOC continuously rather than by periodic sampling find the reporting overhead drops as much as the emissions do.
Drying energy is the trade
Water evaporates more slowly than solvent and takes more energy to remove. Without a dryer upgrade, a conversion frequently shows up as a line speed reduction rather than a savings line.
The honest comparison prices the dryer capacity alongside the adhesive, then measures energy per thousand units rather than energy per hour.
Bond performance in real conditions
Modern water-based formulations match solvent performance on most paper and board substrates. The gaps remain in cold-chain condensation, high-grease contact and some low surface energy films.
Specify the failure condition, not the adhesive family, and let vendors qualify against it.
How to run the conversion
Convert one product family, hold the substrate constant, and measure defect rate, line speed and energy for a full month before extending it. Conversions that fail usually failed because three variables moved at once.
